Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene

Maryland Health Initiatives History

Although a number of health disparity challenges continue as 21st century begins, Maryland has had a substantial history in the effort to eliminate health disparities.   In particular, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has addressed disparities among the state’s white, African Americans, and other populations. Some noteworthy efforts at the statewide level include:
  • Report of the Governor's Commission on Problems Affecting the Negro Population – 1943

  • Commission On Black And Minority Health- 1987
    (Now Is The Time)

Maryland's local jurisdictions have been active contributors to these statewide efforts. Activities have been organized, implemented, and are on-going in many local communities around the state. For more details on local efforts, please use the links to Maryland's 24 local jurisdictions.
