Center for Cultural Competency, Johns Hopkins Medicine International

Program Description:  The Center for Cultural Competency’s mission is to initiate, integrate and promote culturally competent services within health care systems.  The Center designs and delivers assessments and training services that are practical, hands-on and application –based.

Center for Health Disparities Solutions  

Program Description:  The Center for Health Disparities Solutions is dedicated to the elimination of disparities in health and health care among racial and ethnic populations, socioeconomic groups, and geopolitical categories such as urban, rural, and suburban populations. The Center conducts multidisciplinary basic and translational research with the goals of advancing knowledge on the causes of health disparities and developing interventions to eliminate disparities.

Center on Health Disparities Research, JHU School of Nursing

Program Description:  As the result of a partnership between JHU School of Nursing and North Carolina A & T State University School of Nursing, the Center is one of eight partnerships funded by the NIH National Institute of Nursing Research and the NIH National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities to study disparities in health care.  The CHDR works to both advance our understanding of health disparities and to expand the cadre of nurse researchers involved in minority health and health disparities research.

Urban Health Institute

Program Description:  The mission of the Urban Health Institute is to marshal the resources of the Johns Hopkins Institutions as well as other external resources, to improve the health and well-being of the residents of East Baltimore and Baltimore City and to promote evidence-based interventions to solve urban health problems nationwide.

Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Maryland Cigarette Restitution Fund Program (CRFP) 

Program Description:  The Maryland Legislature enacted Senate Bill 896/ House Bill 1425 in April, 2000, which created the Cigarette Restitution Fund Program (CRFP). The CRFP oversees the use of Master Settlement Agreement funds which are currently being used to fund activities/projects.  The components of the program include: cancer prevention, education, screening and treatment and tobacco use prevention and cessation.

Minority Health and Health Disparities Initiative 

Program Description:  In fulfillment of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s mission to promote the health of all Maryland citizens, the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities (MHHD) shall focus the Department’s resources on eliminating minority health disparities.

Minority Outreach and Technical Assistance (MOTA)

Program Description:  The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provides outreach and technical assistance to African American and other minority communities for the purpose of organizing their effective participation in CRFP.  Minority participation in local community health coalitions is intended to enhance the efforts of local health departments to decrease the incidence of cancer and cancer deaths and the prevention and control of tobacco use in minority communities throughout the State.

Program in Minority Health and Health Disparities Education and Research

Program Description:  The University of Maryland School of Medicine Program in Minority Health and Health Disparities Education and Research (PMHHD) educates current and future health professionals about issues related to health disparities, supports relevant multidisciplinary research and fosters quality clinical care for minorities and diverse populations.

Special Populations Cancer Research Network

Program Description:  The Maryland Special Populations Cancer Research Network (MSPNP) is one of 18 “Special Population Network” grants funded throughout the United States to address cancer disparities in minority and medically underserved populations.  The Network works in Maryland to address and eliminate differences in the incidence and mortality associated with cancers in these demographic groups versus the general population.

Statewide Health Network

Program Description:  The University of Maryland Statewide Health Network (UMSHN) is a statewide and community-based infrastructure throughout Maryland which has extensive partnerships with local hospitals, community and faith-based organizations, local health departments, community health centers and other groups. Its objective is to promote cancer and tobacco-related disease prevention and control activities to local residents and local health care professionals.
