What's New in Women's Health  Women's Health

 

·         2009 National Women’s Health Week – May 10 – May 16 

The 10th annual National Women's Health Week will kick off on Mother's Day, May 10, 2009 and will be celebrated until May 16, 2009. National Women's Checkup Day will be Monday, May 11, 2009.  National Women's Health Week is a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH). National Women's Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority. With the theme "It's Your Time," the nationwide initiative encourages women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life.  For more information, visit http://www.womenshealth.gov/WHW/.  

·         2009 Women’s Health Calendar 

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Women’s Health 2009 Women's Health Calendar offers information about common health problems and important symptoms to watch out for. You'll also find charts that describe the screenings and immunizations you need, tips on how to get a second opinion and how to read a drug label, and more — all in a handy, portable calendar you can keep with you year round!  For more information on the calendar or to download a PDF version, visit http://www.womenshealth.gov/pub/2009WHCalendar.cfm.

•     2008 National Women’s Health Week – May 11 -17

The 9th annual National Women's Health Week will kick off on Mother's Day, May 11, 2008 and will be celebrated until May 17, 2008. National Women's Check-Up Day will be Monday, May 12, 2008.  National Women's Health Week empowers women across the country to get healthy by     taking action. The nationwide initiative, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health (OWH), encourages women to make their health a top        priority and take simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life. During the week, families, communities, businesses, government, health organizations and other groups work together to     educate women about steps they can take to improve their physical and mental health and        prevent disease.  For more information, please visit www.womenshealth.gov/WHW/.

 

•    11 Institutions Established in Second Round of Specialized Centers of Research on Sex/Gender Factors Affecting Women's Health 

The National Institutes of Health Office of Research on Women’s Health announces 11 new or continuing Specialized Center of Research on Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Women’s Health Awards, as a result of the second solicitation for this program. •    Women’s Health Symposium “Remembering Our Health” to be held at Coppin State University in Baltimore on November 3, 2007 

The Women’s Health Symposium will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2007 from 7:30 am - 5:00 pm at Coppin State University in Baltimore. Sponsors for the Symposium include: The BET Foundation, General Mills, and MERCK in partnership with Coppin State University and the Supernatural Woman Conference, Inc.  This event is free to the public but registration is required and seating is limited. Registration includes moderated panel discussions, workshops, seminars, health screenings, breakfast refreshments, lunch and special gifts.  For more information, please click here.

       Statement from the National Cancer Institute on FDA Approval of the HPV Vaccine 

Summary:  On June 8, 2006 the National Cancer Institute posted a press release announcing the approval by the Food and Drug Administration of the vaccine GardasilTM, which protects against infection from the two types of human papillomavirus (HPV).  HPV is the cause of the majority of cervical cancers worldwide.
